It’s the battle of the underdogs tonight as Cononley Sports and Wilsden Athletic go head to head in the final of the Craven League’s Northern Plant Hire Trophy, 6.30pm.
The Division One teams both put out Premier Division opposition in the semi-finals and now meet at Gargrave in what promises to be a close encounter.
Wilsden reached the final last season but lost 4-2 to Trawden Celtic and will be keen to go one step further. They have a decent cup pedigree this season, having reached the last 16 of the West Riding County Challenge Cup.
Cononley finished third in the league, one place and three points ahead of Wilsden but lost 7-2 at home to their cup final opponents. The return fixture saw the points awarded to Cononley, eventually proving the difference between the teams in the final standings.
Neither side has had much luck with draws in the competition following a string of away ties.
Until the semi-final, Wilsden had played every round away. Their one home draw brought a walkover against Horton in the second round. But that did not hold them back with victories recorded over Addingham Reserves (9-0), AFC Colne (1-0), Earby Town (4-2) and Grindleton (1-0).
It was a similar story for Cononley. They were plucked out of the bag second in every round, but did manage to get a home tie in the semi-final when their match was switched from Rolls.
After a 2-1 win against Division Two side Ingrow & Worth Valley, Sports have seen off three Premier Division teams to reach the final – Carleton 4-1, league title favourites Skipton LMS 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw and Rolls 2-1.
