Keighley Athletic secure cup final place

Park Row Panthers 1-2 Keighley Athletic

Keighley Athletic booked their place in the final of the Invitational Cup after victory in their semi-final clash with Park Row, at a breezy Bramhope.
Facing a tall Park Row side, and playing into a first half wind, the visitors withstood an aerial bombardment with goalkeeper Heath Maddocks outstanding throughout.
It was Athletic who eventually took the lead in the first half when the muscular Tony Cooper bundled home Mick Goodwins pinpoint cross. Park Row continued their ever present threat, and unsurprisingly equalized before the break, all be it in fortuitous fashion, as Damien Mellor’s defensive header inadvertently ricocheted off an oblivious Park Row striker.
Athletic used the wind at their backs to their advantage in the second period, as they began to dominate. Several chances were spurned before James Gill dispatched the winning goal from the penalty spot after Cooper found his shot handled.
It was no more than Athletic deserved, as they now find themselves in the final on May 19th at Rawdon, against Horsforth St Margarets.

Oxenhope provide thrashing in chase for league title

Oxenhope 7-0 Kippax

A 7-0 thrashing of Kippax ensured Oxenhope remain on course for a chance of securing the West Yorkshire League’s Premier Division title.
Oxenhope dominated play from the whistle, Will Lee hitting the post from 40 yards out and a couple of good efforts from Dan Moriarty just off target. On the half hour Lee and Michael Garnett linked up to deliver the perfect cross for Moriarty to head in the opener. Five minutes later a Moriarty corner was palmed away by the keeper but fell to Garnett at the far post and from an acute angle he lashed the ball into the net. Soon after a crude challenge on Ollie Metcalfe saw the midfield playmaker carried off, and the Worth valley side had to re-organise.
After the break Oxenhope continued to press forwards and on the hour Garnett won the ball and threaded a through ball to Gaz Ritson, with a one on one with the keeper the wide player tucked the ball away confidently. On 75 minutes Garnett surged into the area and was brought down, the referee had no alternative but to send the Kippax defender off and Chris Day drove home the spot kick. Moriarty then saw a strike hit the crossbar before on 80 minutes, a Ritson cross was met by a Garnett header down to Lee and he hammered home the fifth. Minutes later sub Joel Gallagher rolled the ball into Garnett to finish at close range and the rout was complete when a handball by a defender was dispatched by Day from the penalty spot and in so doing notched up Oxenhope’s hundredth goal of the season.
Already with several players on the injured list manager Paul Brearey will have to shuffle his pack once again with injuries to midfield maestro Ollie Metcalfe and defender Rob Andrew that will make his task of an assault on the summit even harder. With no rest bite on the fixture list Oxenhope play league leaders Beeston and Pool mid-week before hosting East End Park on Saturday (2.30pm) at the Recreation Ground.

Cobbydalers end season on a high

Silsden 2-1 Runcorn Linnets

Andy Geary’s Silsden overcame a strong Runcorn by two goals to one at the Angel Telecom Staudium, as they secured safety by a comfortable nine points. Geary’s team selection consisted of youngsters, combined with a few “old heads”.
The Linnets, fresh from there NWCFL Cup cup victory on Thursday evening, started brightly, and were soon on the attack. The visitors looked dangerous, but any advances were soon quelled by the Silsden back four. Silsden had chances themselves, as Dale Feather’s snap shot from a ball in sailed over the bar, with James Gill also curling a left footed effort just wide of the goal.
The Linnets lack of penetration would prove costly, as Silsden took the lead after 22 minutes. Runcorn keeper Adam Judge picked up what was deemed a Mike Garrod passback, resulting in an indirect free kick for the Cobbydalers from just 13 yards out. The ball was touched to Gill, who curled it round the defensive wall to give the home side the breakthrough.
The visitors responded instantly though, but Michael Burkes header failed to stay on target, as they pressed for the equalizer. Silsden continued to create the clearer chances, Will Stories low crosses caused problems, as Runcorn were lucky not to turn them into their own net.
The visitors fashioned their best chance of the game so far, when Silsden’s Joe Jalil tripped Jamie Campbell on the edge of the area. Martin Crowder’s free kick could only fall straight into the arms of Ed Hall in the Silsden goal.
The Cobbydalers defence had had it fairly easy in the first half, but this wouldn’t be the case in the second period, as the visitors had the wind at their backs. Runcorn showed their intent immeadiately, as Sammon struck a low drive, which forced Hall to save at full stretch. The following corner was headed over.
The visitor finally were granted the equalizer they pressed for, as Lomax swung in a fantastic corner, which was headed powerfully past a flailing Hall by Burke. Burke, who has been the clubs centre half all season, was given the opportunity to play up front for the final game of the season, and grasped it with both hands. It would turn out to be a bitter sweet afternoon for Burke however, as he headed into his own net four minutes later to restore Silsden’s lead. After chasing a long ball back in his own area, his header back to his onrushing keeper was misjudged, and trickled into the Runcorn net to take Silsden 2-1 ahead.
Their only threat from then was substitute Lee Maden’s overhead kick thumping the Silsden crossbar.
Silsden held on though to secure victory. Managerial changes, and experienced players leaving has left Geary with a tough job to pick up the pieces at the Angel Telecom Stadium in the second half of the season. However with the development of fresh blood, and some old heads, the team has pulled through to secure their status as a North West Counties League Premier Division side.

Whitestar felled in 7 goal thriller

 Silsden Whitestar 3-4 Gargrave

Despite being considered the better team, Silsden Whitestar couldn’t overcome Gargrave in their Craven League Division 1 clash.
Gargrave were awarded two penalties in the first half, after some debatable officiating. Gary Lund managed to keep one out, however the visitors converted the second, and Whitestar found themselves 3-1 down at the break. Daniel Cox with the home sides effort.
The home side pressed in the second period, and Daniel Cox was on hand again to snatch another goal back for Whitestar. Gargrave however hit back immediately, taking a 4-2 lead. Sam Boothman scored to grab another goal back for Whitestar, but it wasn’t to be for the Silsden outfit, who rued a pile of missed chances.
Gary Lund was Man of the Match for Whitestar, after an impressive performance between the sticks.

Bingley seek fresh blood

Bingley are looking to recruit some new playing staff for the 2013/2014 season, as they aim to develop the town’s footballing status.
Firstly they aim to develop a new age group within the Bingley Junior ranks. The intention is to create an u21 team in the hope of building a bridge between youth football through to open age development. Games would be played midweek in both the league and cup. They would also welcome any interest in those interested in coaching the u21 side.
Bingley Town are also looking for players interested in playing open age football as they look to introduce a second team for the 2013/2014 season. They require players interested in competing for places in both teams as they look to build a squad capable of achieving promotions through the divisions and achieve their target of moving into the West Yorkshire League and playing county amateur football.
Interest would also be welcomed from coaches and managers to fill vacant positions in the management structure as Bingley Town look to expand the coaching and management team to help reach their goals.
