Late goal breaks Oxenhope hearts

Oxenhope Rec logoLeeds City 3 Oxenhope Rec 2
Oxenhope travelled to second-placed Leeds City in the Premier Division of the West Yorkshire League with some trepidation, being without several key players, including injured leading scorer Michael Garnett.
In fact they put in a spirited performance and were only denied a deserved share of the points by a last-minute goal.
Leeds started the brighter, their pace and fitness plus moving the ball round quickly put the visitors under pressure.
After 20 minutes Leeds opened the scoring when a break down the right saw their wide player cut into the centre and place his strike beyond keeper Sam Lee.

A late goal from Mark Threlfall wrecked Silsden’s hopes of snatching a Boxing Day point in their North West Counties League match at Barlick.
Aaron Hollindrake put the hosts ahead after eight minutes but Lee McGowan equalised 10 minutes before half-time.
Threlfall struck the winner with five minutes to go.
The Cobbydalers travelled to Barlick for the Boxing Day derby with the clear instructions from manager Andy Geary to expect a battle, not “El Classico”.
His words went unheeded in a first half when the only Christmas cheer they got was that they weren’t at least three goals down before Lee McGowan netted for the Cobbydalers on the stroke of half-time to level the scores.
Barlick, with three former Silsden players in their line-up, Jake McEneaney, Harry Thompson and Aaron Hollindrake, dominated the first half with some slick passing and movement, constantly opening up the over-stretched Silsden back four.

Vocal, tough and passionate, but no animosity for derby date

It’s derby day today with Silsden making the short trip to fellow West Riding side Barnoldwick Town.
Local government boundaries may have changed to dump Barlick in Lancashire, but they remain the right side of the border for the football authorities and traditionalists.
Cobbydalers manager Andy Geary is looking forward to the match, against a side he managed briefly, and which includes several former Silsden players in their squad.
Aaron Hollindrake, Harry Thompson and Jake McEneaney are among many players who have appeared for both teams but Geary insists there is no animosity between the clubs.
“There is a healthy rivalry,” he told the Keighley News.
“In derby games you expect it to be tough and passionate and I’m sure both sets of supporters will be quite vocal.
“But after the game I would expect us to go and have a drink together.”
Last season, Silsden drew 1-1 at home but lost the return 2-0.
Should today’s match fall victim to the weather, a rearranged date has already been set for Saturday.

AFC Liverpool 3 Silsden 1
by Jim Rosser

A turn around in form saw Silsden’s three-match winning run end as their hosts chalked up their first win in seven matches.
The Scouse outfit had faltered, losing four and drawing two but were in sixth place, only eight points off the top spot.
Reds manager Paul Moore had blamed injuries and work commitments for the slip in form but, with experienced players returning, he was hoping to get back to winning ways.
Andy Geary, who was without recent scorers, Josh McNulty and Dale Feather and also James Gill, brought in former Silsden junior Lee McGowan to lead the attack.
From the outset, the game flowed from end to end and might have ended as a high scoring draw, had all the chances been converted.

Ten-man Wilsden dug deep to earn a point in their Craven League Premier Division match at Marley.
Andrew North opened the scoring for the visitors but Wilsden soon levelled through Dave McCarten.
North struck twice more, including a penalty, to make it 3-1 at the break.
When Wilsden had their goalkeeper sent off it looked to be all over but they battled back and Thomas Carberry pulled one back before McCarten struck the goal of the game to pick up a point.

Depleted Badgers earn a point.

Salts 1 Broomhill 1

With a side missing a host of regulars, Broomhill earned a draw with third place Salts but can feel aggrieved at not claiming all 3 points.
Broomhill controlled the game throughout and were in command by half time but had failed to capitalise on their superior possession.
After half time, Salts came back at the Badgers and the game was a more even affair. However, another goal from Andy Tanner put Broomhill 1-0 up 25 minutes from time.
This goal calmed the team and they were in line to earn the 3 points.
However, a brilliant tackle by David Rhodes was wrongly given as a penalty and the Salts striker gladly dispatched from 12 yards.
From this moment, both teams had opportunities to win the game but subsequently neither claimed the win.
